IIE(HK) Seminar on Delivering Change and Creating Value through IE Methodology

The Seminar on Delivering Change and Creating Value through Industrial Engineering (IE) Methodology, which was co-organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Institute of Industrial Engineers (Hong Kong), was held on 10 May 2013. The objective of this seminar is to share the success stories of applications of IE methodologies for service upgrading to bring about customer satisfaction.
After Dr. Sammy Wan, our president gave an opening speech, it was also our honor to have Ir. Dr. the Hon Lo Wai-kwok, BBS, JP (Member of the Legislative Council (Engineering Functional Constituency) to deliver an honorable speech. Dr. Lo mentioned his deep relationship with IE (his first job was in IE and his first Master degree was also in IE) and he remembered the some major principles in IE such as 4M – Man, Machine, Money and Method and how IE helped him to solve problems during the career.
We were also honored to invite representatives from large organizations from various service industries such as Hong Kong Railway, Disneyland Hong Kong, Hong Kong Towngas, Modern Terminal and Hospital Authority to share their experience on how the knowledge of IE can help their organizations to improve their business.

IIE (HK) 32nd Annual General Meeting cum Annual Dinner

1The IIE (HK) 32nd Annual General Meeting cum Annual Dinner was held successfully on 17 August 2012 at World Trade Centre Club. It was a flagship event of the Hong Kong Chapter of IIE with a number of honourable guests, distinguished speakers, professionals, experts and academics to exchange views and share valuable experience. The whole event attracted more than 100 participants which spearheaded the aim of our Institute to promote industrial engineering in the community.

The Annual General Meeting was held before the Annual Dinner where the Chapter reports were presented by the Office Bearers. The Meeting was chaired by Ir Paul Mak, Past Chairman of IIE (HK). The election of Office Bearers for 2012/13 was arranged after then and the Office Bearers for 2012/13 were listed as follows:

  • President                            –          Dr. Sammy Wan
  • Vice President                    –          Mr. Coleman Tse
  • Honourary Secretary          –          Mr. Heman Hu
  • Honourary Treasurer         –          Mr. Alex Cheng

Dr. Sammy Wan then presented the future plan for the next term by highlighting the key areas of development such as promotion of good IE practices, support of local IE researches, reinforcement of connections with professional institutions, promotion of IIE image and maintenance of financial sustainability.

A networking reception was arranged after the Meeting where numerous honourable guests in various institutions, organizations and universities came together with our members to share our achievement over the year.


The theme of the Annual Dinner is “IE Transformation in China: From Moderation to Sustainable Development”. During the Annual Dinner, Dr. Sammy Wan delivered his welcome speech to the participants. Ir Dr. Samson Tam, JP, Member of the HKSAR Legislative Council (Information Technology Functional Constituency), was invited as our Guest of Honour of the Annual Dinner to deliver an honourable speech before the Dinner. He shared with our participants about the strategic directions of Hong Kong for shaping and driving our technology and productivity development. After the speech, Dr. Wan led our guests, past presidents and members of Executive Committee to come to the stage for a toasting ceremony.


In the middle of the meal, Ir Dr. LO Wai-kwok, BBS, MH, JP, was invited as our distinguished guest speaker to deliver a talk, “Sustainable Growth in the 21st Century – Challenges and Opportunities for China Mainland and Hong Kong” for our guests and members. After the talk, a harp performance was organized where the marvelous harpist, Ms. Katrina Wong, performed three pieces of music.


During the Dinner, IIE (HK) Scholarship Awards were presented to the outstanding IE students and scholars of various universities in Hong Kong. A total of 13 students received the awards from our scholarship sponsors. Mr. John Hung, Chairman of Membership & Scholarship Committee, then briefed the “IIE Honours Mentorship Programme 2012” and all events in this programme. Souvenirs were presented to all our mentors to recognize their contributions and efforts for providing guidance and advices to our mentees.

After a few rounds of lucky draw, the event ended in great success and further broadening of the minds of our participants.


The 9th Conference on IE Applications, Promotion and Education

The 9th Conference on IE Applications, Promotion and Education (第九屆工業工程應用、推廣及人才培養研討會) organized by The Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (中國機械工程學會) was successfully held on 7-8 August 2012 at Beijing. The Conference aims to promote the development of IE and explore various applications in China. Dr. Sammy Wan and Mr. Harry Li were invited to participate in this Conference. During the Conference, Dr. Wan delivered a talk of “The IE Transformation in China: Challenge, Opportunities and Hong Kong Experience (工業工程在中國的轉型: 挑戰與應對及香港經驗借鏡)”. Mr. Li also shared his experience in computer simulation with the attendants. Technical visit to the renowned factory, SMC China, was arranged for the participants and various good IE practices were shared during the visit.

After the Conference, Dr. Wan and Mr. Li visited the Headquarters of The Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society and shared experience and expertise with Ms. Wang Ling, Deputy Director of the Society, and her colleagues. We had also discussed various proposals to coordinate and collaborate closely in order to further promote our profession to facilitate the development of various engineering industries in China.
