Definition of Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and method of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.

The Institute of Industrial Engineers (Hong Kong) Ltd., IIE (HK) LTD., has developed from its origin as an offshore chapter of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers to an affiliated member of the worldwide Institute of Industrial Engineers representing Industrial Engineering professionals in Hong Kong. The parent Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) is based in Atlanta, Georgia U.S.A., and members of IIE in Hong Kong enjoy the same benefits and privileges as all the other 40,000 members of IIE worldwide.

  3. To encourage and assist education and research in the art and science of Industrial Engineering.
  4. To promote the unrestricted dissemination of knowledge and information by means of meetings and publications relating to the art and science of Industrial Engineering.


  1. Journal of Industrial Engineering
    Your membership with annual dues in IIE includes a subscription to the monthly magazine Industrial Engineering, the most widely read magazine in the field. This contains timely articles of major interest and news of recent development in all areas of Industrial Engineering.
  2. Division Membership
    Membership in IIE gives you the opportunity to become affiliated with specialized divisions for closer contact with other professionals engaged in similar industrial or technical specialties. There is a total of 24 specialist divisions. Each member is entitled to one tree division membership and will receive newsletters in these specialist areas.
  3. Other Publications
    Member may subscribe, at reduced rate, to IIE transactions, and The Engineering Economist. As part to the Institute’s continuing Education Programme, members may purchase books, publications and periodicals at special discounts ranging from 10% to 50% off the list price through the Institute. IIE (HK) LTD. also publishes Annual Journal and newsletters.
  4. Technical Meetings and Seminars
    IIE (HK) LTD. holds regular meetings where eminent educators and specialists are invited to give talks and hold workshops. IIE (HK) LTD. members also enjoy reduced rates at seminars and courses held by the parent Institute.
  5. Social Contacts
    Throughout the year, IIE (HK) LTD. organizes social activities such as membership luncheons, fellowship dinner, visits, annual dinner, etc. Through these face to face meetings, members may develop personal contacts and friendship with their contemporaries which are often invaluable in the months and years to come.

Membership Grades

IIE membership grades provide a means for personal recognition and distinction. There is a grade in which everyone with an interest and some education or experience in industrial engineering will qualify. All members are eligible to apply for upgrading when they qualify for a higher grade.

Senior Member - The highest professional grade for which application may be made, this designation requires experience or achievement reflecting professional maturity. The Senior Member is entitled to all rights and privileges of IIE and eligible to hold all offices to the Institute.

Member - The Member grade can be entered directly by individuals who are graduates of an accredited industrial engineering or equivalent curricula. Others are qualified when they meet the experience and educational requirements detailed in the preceding table. This is the largest category of Institute membership. The Member is entitled to vote on all ballots of IIE, and is eligible to hold all elected and appointed offices except on the institute Board of Trustees.

Executive Affiliate - This grade is generally offered by invitation. The Executive Affiliate member will have attained eminence in a profession or science or be in an executive policy-making role in his organization. Persons considered for this grade should be in positions of leadership and influence, and whose affiliation with the Institute will enhance the profession. The support of high-level executives and eminent professionals is strategic to the Institute and the profession.

Student - This grade is open to full-time students who will be eligible for the discounted dues rate of HK$250 (vs $1000 for regular members) and will pay no application fee in addition to his dues. Students will enjoy all the benefits of a regular member except he cannot vote in elections nor can he hold any office.
